Prescription glasses, contact lenses, and prescription sunglasses are not covered by Medicare. That’s why many patients rely on private health funds with optical benefits to reduce their vision costs.

What Does Medicare Cover?
If you hold a current Medicare card, you’re eligible for specific eye care benefits:
- Under 65 years: One comprehensive eye test every three years.
- 65 years and over: One comprehensive eye test every year.
- Contact lens consultations: Within certain optical prescriptions.
- Ongoing eye tests: For conditions such as glaucoma or macular degeneration
Are All Eye Tests Covered by Medicare?
While most consultations with our optometrists are eligible for a Medicare rebate, please note that we are a private billing practice, and there may be some out-of-pocket expenses. We offer on-the-spot electronic claiming to make claiming easier, so your Medicare portion is immediately processed.
We also bulk-bill children aged 16 years and under and pension cardholders.
Emergency eye consultations are private-billed, and you will receive the Medicare rebate immediately.
Private Health Funds and Optical Benefits
While private health funds typically don’t cover eye tests, they may cover a significant portion (up to 100%) of the cost of prescription lenses, frames, or contact lenses, depending on your policy.
Our team is experienced in helping you claim your optical benefits directly so you can reduce your out-of-pocket expenses when purchasing eyewear, contact lenses, or designer frames.
